Cheap Blackpool Airport Parking » Airport Information>History History of Blackpool AirportThen known as Squire’s Gate, the airport site of the country’s first air show, opened in 1909 for a short time. The next year, the land was used as a race track and continued for this purpose until 1914 when the business failed.
The location became a temporary military convalescent centre during the First World War. This lasted until 1924.
Then, in 1927 a competitor airport was opened at Stanley Park. Flights to the Isle of Man originated at this site. However, Squire’s Gate was competing with Stanley Park and proved to be more popular. Thus, Stanley Park closed down in 1936, making Squire’s Gate the only local airport. It began growing slowly but only until 1939 when the site was used by Air Ministry for their war efforts. Many RAF hangars were constructed during this time along with runways and ammunition stores being built. Aircraft construction and testing were done here as well.
After the war, the airport went back to being a civil airport and made more changes to encourage passenger traffic. In 1962, the airport became known as Blackpool Airport, dropping the name of Squire’s Gate. It became a Public Limited Company in 1987 with the council having 100% of the shares of the company.
The original wooden terminal building was replaced by a 2 million pound new terminal in 1995, making the airport more attractive for the growing number of travellers using it.
City Hopper began running Blackpool Airport in 2004.
